Yogurt comes with a long list of benefits, but there has also been some myths circulating. In this list we will focus on the top 7 you should know.

1. Greek yogurt is from Greece

The term "Greek Yogurt" was actually coined by a Turkish yogurt company in the United States. They came up with the term because they thought it sounded better than "Turkish Yogurt". Greek yogurt is actually just strained yogurt where the whey has been removed. This produces a thicker, creamier product. The history of this process has long been debated. Some believe the Greeks invented the process, and some believe the Turks did.

2. Yogurt can cure hangovers

Any meal high in protein and carbs can help regulate the body's blood sugar. Having a meal before drinking can help with alcohol absorption, but the best cure for a hangover is watching how much you drink.

3. Eating yogurt before bed can can cause a cold

For individuals with existing digestion issues, full-fat yogurt has been shown to produce GERD symptoms. Some also experience a slight cough along with reflux. This does not happen to everyone and if you do have digestion issues, you should consult a doctor before making changes to your diet.

4. Greek yogurt is vegetarian

Many companies use an additive called gelatin which is animal based. According to PETA, certain yogurt varieties include boiled animal skins, tendons, ligaments, or bones, which create the gelatin that gives the yogurt it's consistency.

5. Fro-Yo is just as healthy as the regular kind

"Frozen yogurt is just ice-cream by a different name. Yogurt is used to make the desert instead of milk.

6. Flavored Greek Yogurt is just as healthy

Flavored Greek yogurt is not as healthy as their unflavored counterpart. Companies typically add high amounts of sugar and additives that would not compliment a healthy diet.

7. Greek yogurt is lower in calories

Greek yogurt tends to have lower sugar and carbs than regular yogurt but the same serving has about the same amount of calories. The only difference is there will be additives and artificial sweeteners in the regular yogurt.
